Cary Breaks Ground on First Affordable Housing Development on Town-Owned Land

Nov 7, 2024

Cary marked an exciting milestone this Monday with a groundbreaking ceremony for its first mixed-income housing development on town-owned land. Located at 921 SE Maynard Road, this new development will create 126 high-quality multi-family housing units, 64 of which will be reserved for low- and moderate-income households.

The new development, designed to prioritize sustainability, will feature a range of environmentally supportive elements, including EV charging stations, solar panels, and green stormwater infrastructure. With convenient access to a nearby transit line and new greenways and public roads, future residents will enjoy easy connectivity to downtown Cary and surrounding areas, making it easy to access jobs, services, and recreational activities.

“This is a remarkable step for Cary, reflecting our ongoing commitment to meeting the housing needs of our community in a thoughtful and sustainable way,” said Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht during the ceremony. “It’s a place where people of diverse incomes can live comfortably and enjoy all the resources that make Cary a great place to call home.”

This development aligns with the goals of the Cary Housing Plan, adopted by the Cary Town Council in 2021, which calls for increased housing diversity and affordability. The initiative is a partnership with Laurel Street, the housing developer who will construct, own, and manage the property. In addition to Cary’s investment, federal and county funds are helping to make this vision a reality. Site work is planned to begin in December with an anticipated completion date of 2026.

The ceremony included remarks from U.S. Congresswoman Deborah Ross, Cary Mayor Weinbrecht, Councilmember Lori Bush, and Laurel Street Executive Vice President Lee Cochran underscoring the broad support for housing initiatives that focus on community, sustainability, and accessibility.

With this development, Cary continues its commitment to creating housing diversity and ensuring all Cary residents can enjoy the high quality of life Cary has to offer. For more information on this development and Cary’s other housing initiatives, visit housing.carync.gov.
