Cary Initiates ADU Ordinance Amendment

Jan 17, 2024

One of the biggest challenges facing Cary is ensuring there are adequate housing choices for our diverse population. Expanding the potential for ADUs is one of actions called for in the 2021 Cary Housing Plan as a way to increase high-quality, new housing opportunities to meet residents’ needs while maintaining neighborhood character.

ADUs are smaller, independent living spaces on the same lot as the larger, primary house such as an apartment over a garage, backyard cottage or an addition to the main house. They create gentle density and can be a choice for seniors aging in place, young adults, multi-generational families, individuals with special needs.

The ordinance amendment will expand where ADUs are allowed in Cary and simplify the rules to make them more feasible and accessible. Some development restrictions such as setbacks and others, not regulated by Cary, such as HOA bylaws and NC building code will still apply.

Over 100 residents attended a January community meeting to ask questions and express support for a potential amendment. We anticipate bringing it forward to Council this spring with implementation in late 202.
