- White Flag Shelters
A White Flag warning is a program in North Carolina that provides temporary emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness when severe weather is expected. A White Flag is declared when the temperature or windchill is expected to be below 35°. Shelters are open from 5pm to 7am.
Cary participates in the Wake County Continuum of Care NC 507, a collaboration of over fifty public, private and nonprofit entities in working together to make homelessness in Wake County rare, brief and unrepeated. Cary partners primarily with two local nonprofits to support people experiencing housing instability or homelessness: Dorcas Ministries through the Stable Homes Cary Program and The Carying Place through the Journey Home Program. Cary also supports area organizations, including Triangle Family Services and A Doorway to Hope, to provide street outreach and emergency assistance.
